The Greatest Mistakes of Website Designers

There are many experts who will stand in line to tell you what you need to do to make cool website designs. You try your best to follow their advice, but the same avoidable mistakes are made time after time. The next time you are thinking about perfecting your website design pay attention and make sure that your web designer doesn’t commit any of these web design sins.

Simple and Clutter Free

The simplest displays are often the best. You might like your website design to cover every possible eventuality on your homepage, but it will look a lot better if you cut down on the unnecessary information. Your visitors will be a lot happier if they can easily navigate around your site, even if it takes them a couple more clicks to find what they need.

New visitors to your site usually just want to just browse and see what it’s about before they commit to anything else. It might look like you have a high number of members on your site, but if they only visit once and then leave, it may be because they’re on information overload. If a new visitor wants to buy something, let them get used to your site before you bombard them with information.

The Status Quo

You might have one of the great cool website designs, but that doesn’t mean that it will always be that way. Think of good web design as a work in progress and be on the lookout for new things that you can try in order to keep it attractive to your visitors. In the fast moving marketplace of the internet, it’s important that you pay close attention to your competitor’s websites and do not let yours fall behind in the new technologies. If you see something you like on a competitor’s site, talk to your website designer about creating something unique for you along the same lines.

Ignorance is not Bliss

The needs of your visitors are more important than your need to have the ultimate website. You might think that you have some cool website designs, but if your visitors don’t like them or can’t use them easily, they’ll likely not come back. Remember the old adage – the customer is always right. If you give them what they want then they will come back time and again.

On a regular basis, check over your website to find what pages are popular with visitors and make more of them. You should also improve on or remove the pages that are unpopular. By making your website more popular with visitors you will substantially increase your sales.

Please Help

Nobody knows everything about everything. You might make be able to create a pretty good web design, but the chances of you being able to give it that professional edge are slim. Don’t make the mistake of putting up an amateur site and then expecting professional sales. You can find good website designers that will take your ideas and turn them into a profitable, easy to navigate site.

Website design is a complex and ever-changing field. And it’s easy to fall into one of these traps that will make your website less popular with visitors and cost your business in the bottom line. Find out what your visitors want and then try to give them more of it.

Guild Clan Website Hosting benefits

clan websites
by RCAHMS

Article by Matthew Anton

For many gamers, guild clan website hosting can mean the difference between a guilds life or death, literally. Whether a new or seasoned guild leader, having a personal home on the internet ensures the groups ability to collaborate, discuss, and plan future events. Guild Clan Website Hosting has many benefits: planning, communication, events/raids, scheduling, privacy, discussion forums, recruitment, and many other intangibles.

Ever try to get a group of people together in real life at the same time? Chances are someone has not shown up or didn’t RSVP. With video games the same is true; people need to be able to clearly see a guilds schedule of events on a calendar and be able to plan on attending or letting the guild leader know they can’t make it. Without this virtual home on the internet, guilds and clans would be left to hope X amount of members show up for their newest raid, or event. Now with guild hosting a guild leader can assess if they have enough members to go forward with an event rather than canceling.

Guilds and Clans can take advantage of private forums through a guild hosting provider to air out their indifference or discuss latest strategies, events, and recruitment. Without these private forums guilds and clans would be forced to discuss private/personal issues with guild members over a generic forum where non-members could view this. This is not acceptable so the guild host provider gives the guild/clan privacy as well as their own personal space. Discussing family matters at Dunkin Donuts is analgous to discussing recruitment with non members.

With the new age of guild clan website hosting providers springing up such as CharacterPlanet, it is becoming easier to match Virtual Characters looking for Guilds and Guilds looking for Virtual Characters. By taking the approach of matching Virtual Characters to Guilds/Clans rather than Real Life people to Guilds/Clans CharacterPlanet gives its members ability to be virtually matched. Think E-harmony only for the Virtual Worlds. The ability to save hundreds of hours on recruitment is a greatly added benefit of guild clan hosting. When one views a guild site they can easily see what race/class level combinations the guild needs as well as what level equipment one should have or any stipulation such as, real life tournament experience for CounterStrike or Epic gear for World of Warcraft.

Hosting can also mean more notoriety within the gaming community. If you have a guild clan website it immediately gives your organization the credibility it deserves. This landing page for the curious, enviuous, and even your enemies will solidfy your position for that game or games. Fires of Heaven is a great example as their website received hundreds of thousands of hits. It is forming this buzz about ones guild that also leads to more recruits and of course more enemies.

Depending on what game one plays there are a myriad of guild website hosting templates and clan templates as well. A World of Warcraft guild website will certainly look different than a Halo or EverQuest site but the principles are the same. Whether you want to gain more credibility, become more organized as a leader, or create a sense of teamwork within your own guild/clan, guild clan website hosting is beneficial.

There are of course both paid and free hosting solutions. The paid services in the past have dominated but the free ones have made leaps and bounds to give the same services and better in some instances. Most of the paid providers lack a community wrapped around the hosting to make recruitment more tedious than necessary. Regardless of the route you choose, be sure to utilize the awesome power of immortalizing your Guild on the internet with a place you can call home.

How Using Proper Graphic Formats is the Secret to Good Website Design

How using proper graphic formats is the secret to good website design

There are many different file formats that website design companies can use for site design. However, every specific graphic format has its own function and use and it is a part of good website design to use them judiciously.

Properties that these formats have:

In terms of common properties of these website design graphic formats, there are five main types. These are namely:

–       Compression: This refers to the ability to store an image in a smaller file size. This employs using special algorithms to measure pixels as single items.

–       Transparency: This varies the opaqueness of an image from being totally solid to being totally see-through or transparent.

–       Progressive loading: In this case of website design, a part of the image is loaded first. However, it is not decided on the concept of alternating rows. This allows the picture to get loaded quicker.

–       Interlacing: This is much like progressive loading, except that the odd numbered rows of the image appear first, followed by even numbered rows. Users can see images quickly using this format of website design.

–       Animation: In this case of website design graphical formats, various still images are moved in quick succession to make it seem like they are moving. Most animated GIF images work on all browsers as they do not need plug-ins for them.

File formats available:

There are three main graphic file formats in website design. These are GIF, JPEG and PNG. One of the oldest formats is GIF and it helps loading images quickly. They have only 8 bits of color and have interlacing and transparency incorporated in them. These are the most common forms of graphics in website design and images look good in such formats. JPEGs are compressed files and have a 24 bit color capacity. In situations where you need high quality images in website design, a JPEG format works well. Compression elements of JPEG files can be easily controlled by a website design company. The download speeds for such format files is faster and in cases of complicated drawings, the overall quality is excellent. In PNG graphic formats, there is support for 24 bit color images. Both interlacing and transparency is incorporated in such images. Such images also can have a description alongside, for use in search engines. Compared to JPEG images, PNG images look much better and hence are preferred where high quality images are needed. Plus, it overcomes the restrictions of an 8 bit color image in website design.

Website plan

What is a website plan?

A website plan is planning the activities and goals that you would like to see from your website and how you plan to achieve these goals. Things that you should be looking at in your website plan is:

Website brief

This will give you an over view of your website and also be useful for a web design company to understand what you want in your website and how you want it to function.

What you should be doing for you for your company

This will out line the type of website. Is it an ecommerce web design so people should be buying off the website or is it a brochure website and clients should be finding out about your services and contacting you to hire your service.

What traffic you expect to see on your website

You will need to know what sort of traffic you want to see on your website and how you can increase the traffic coming to your website. Google analytics is a good tool to find out how many users are landing on your website and what they are doing when they find your website.

What key terms do you want your website to be found for

Knowing what key terms that people are searching for is a key part to your website Search Engine Optimisation. If you are selling clothing then you don’t want to be found for soft toys. You need to plan out how to be found for your top key terms and what these key terms are. Can you get there by organic search engine optimisation or will you have to pay to get your company found.

How do you plan to market the website

Panning the marketing of your website and how to drive traffic to your website is a key part of having your website. You need to make sure that your website address is on all your marketing material such as your business cards and brochures. If you are not telling anyone about the website you cant expect people to be finding it.

How to drive the users on the website to contact/buy

once you know how many users are landing on your website then you need to start converting these users into clients. There are programs out there which will let you know where users are clicking on your website and give you an idea of how they are navigating through your website to that point of sale. Can you make it easier for a client to find your contact information or buy a product from your site.

How to plan a website to market your home based business part1

how to plan a website
by _ltwp

Article by Kathy Joyce

How to plan a website to market your home based business part1 If you plan to start or already have a home based business then a website is something you should give serious thought to.It’s an inexpensive way to market your products and services. If you sell products you can have an online catalogue which you can update, available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You could set up an e-shop quite easily and accept orders from customers anywhere in the world.Building a website yourself may seem daunting if you have had little experience of the internet and don’t know how to use HTML, but don’t despair!!At one time website building was only for those who where technically minded and had a lot of knowledge about computers, but with some of the easy to use webdesign software available you can do it. For a very easy to use and inexpensive at £15 piece of webdesign software, download webcreator. It’s great for first time webdesigners.http://www.mindscape.co.uk/products/TopProducts.asp?sst=2&cid=2&ssid=41Frontpage is fairly inexpensive and not to difficult to learn how to use. I built my first site using Frontpage.Get a free trial download.http://www.runaware.com/microsoft/frontpage2003/Dreamweaver is more expensive but they do have a 30 day trial download. You get easy to follow tutorials and and extensive manual with it.http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion drc/index.cfm?product=dreamweaverIt may be useful to learn some basic HTML as it will enable you to fine tune pages and add your own coding. For a free online course go to http://www.e-learningcenter.com/free_html_course.htmOver several articles I will try and help you to put together a site that will be profitable and bring in targeted traffic. Before you even begin to design your site you must ask yourself the following questions.1 What is the purpose of your website? Is it to sell products, promote a service, provide information or build a downline.2 Who are your target audience? They may be students, single parents wanting an extra income, or anyone interested in your services or products that you are selling.3 What is your content going to be, and how are you going to present it?Good content is vital. Make each page theme focused and write as if you were talking to a friend. Think what it is that you are trying to achieve and work towards a most wanted response at the end of the page. What do you want your visitor to do? 4 Get yourself a domain name. It looks much more professional to have your own domain name rather than use the free space that comes with your service provider. It doesn’t cost much to buy a domain name and it will give you an enormous advantage. Next you will need to find a web hosting company. I can recommend http://www.internetconnection.net They charge .95 a month (or just under £12 a month) with a 60 day money back guarantee. I use them for several of my websites and always find them to be helpful and quick to respond to any queries I may have. When you have made these important decisions then the next step is to plan the site.Planning your sitePlan your website on paper first. First plan your pages. Start with the index or home page and draw a diagram showing how the pages will link from the index page. Produce a simple flow chart to show how users can navigate through the site.On another piece of paper draw out where you want the page elements to go. This includes the navigation bar, header, logo, main text area, and any other navigation such as a sub menu.Good planning will make it a lot easier when you come to construct the site on the computer.Do some research and take a look at other sites who have a similar theme to yours. Study their design and note if the navigation works well or not. Does it take long to downoad? You can often learn a lot from other webdesigners. When you are happy with your design then it’s time to open up the software you are going to use.In part 2 I will discuss designing the page elements of your website.

How To Improve Your Search Engine Rankings Using Website Grader – For Beginners

Article by Trent Haus

We’ve been using Hubspot’s Website Grader for some time now and we think it’s amazing. It’s a free seo tool that measures the marketing effectiveness of your website. It provides you with a score that incorporates things like website traffic, SEO, social popularity and other technical factors. It also provides some basic advice on how the website can be improved from a marketing perspective. The best thing is that you don’t have to be a programmer to understand the report that it spits out for you, something our clients seem to appreciate.

It’s very simple to use, just visit the site Website Grader website, plug in your website address, and optionally your competitors sites, along with your email address so they can send you the report you. That’s it, sit back and wait 30 second for the system to analyze and grade your site. The report will automatically display in your browser when it’s ready. http://website.grader.com

Your website report is broken down into six main sections:

1. On-Page SEO 2. Off-Page SEO 3. Blogosphere 4. Social Mediasphere 5. Converting Qualified Visitors to Leads 6. Competitive Intelligence. Ok, let’s get started. So what is On-Page SEO? Simply put, it’s your metadata, keywords, images, and readability.

This article is a continuation of my post on “How To Improve Your Search Engine Rankings Using Website Grader – For Beginners”

First visit the Website Grader website, plug in your website address, and optionally your competitors sites, along with your email address so they can send you the report you. Sit back and wait 30 second for the system to analyze and grade your site. The report will automatically display in your browser when it’s ready.

Let’s get started.

Ok, so what is On-Page SEO? Simply put, it’s your metadata, keywords, images, and readability.

A. Metadata

The 3 types of meta data that Hubspot’s Website Grader concerns itself with: Page Title, Meta Description, and Meta Keywords.

Page Title

It is very, very important to have a descriptive title for your site. I can’t stress this enough.

You should limit the length to 65 characters (including spaces) or less.

Each page title should be unique and describe the content on the page.

Incorporate keyword phrases into the title.

It’s important to repeat the title tag of each page as the H1 header tag within the content of that page. It will reinforce the message and your visitors will be more likely to stay.

Google says it’s ok to use a divider in your title. The pipebar “|”, arrow “>”, and hyphen “-” are acceptable. You can use them however you wish. ie: OH! Media | Web Design and Development > Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

Meta Description

A few rules to follow when writing your meta descriptions:

Be descriptive but honest. There is a fine line here, if you lie to gain traffic, the visitors will be visit and leave with a bad taste in their mouth. This will cause poor brand association.

Think of your meta description as an advertisement.

As with the page title, there are limits to how much content you should have.

Google displays up to 160 characters (including spaces) or less.Yahoo! up to 165MSN up to 200+

It’s a good idea to stick with 160 characters or less, that way you’ll be safe in all 3 search engines.

Meta Keywords

There’s debate on the internet whether meta keywords are even relevant anymore. What we do know is that they won’t hurt your rankings, so why not have them?

Here are some rules to follow when writing them:

Sort by most important keywords or key phrases firstOnly use the most relevant keywords for that particular pageDon’t repeat keywords or phrasesIt’s good practice to only have 8 – 10 relevant keywordsUse commas to separate the words and phrasesUse both singular and plural versions of the keywords

Although doing all this work may not be relevant in the eyes of the search engines, it’s good practice for you to gather descriptive words that should be written into the content of your webpages.

B. Heading Summary

This is pretty simple. Google loves header tags. It’s good practice to follow these rules;

Employ the H1 tag for page headlinesUse H2s and H3s for sub headlinesUse them and you’ll notice a positive difference in your rankings.

C. Image Summary

Search engines can’t see images, so it’s important that you employ alt attributes on all of your images. I’m not sure why Website Grader grades you on how many images you have, I can’t see how that can have an impact on your rankings. I think it’s more of a usability issue than anything. Our report says:

Too Many Images Found.Having many images on the web page means the user has to wait longer to view your page. This web page has 18 images. It’s usually better to have fewer or smaller images. Sometimes simply resizing your images will make them smaller in size, and your web page will load faster.

This is not a real concern to us. If you get the same message when you get your report, just disregard it. However, do make sure that all of your images are optimized properly for the web and all have alt tags.

D. Interior Analysis

This section only shows you the other pages that Website Grader processed while creating the report. It doesn’t give you any other relevant information.

E. Readability Level

The system analyzes your textual content and categorizes what level of education is needed to read and understand your site. Again I’m not sure why that is relevant to search engines but Website Grader says the easier your site is to read, the more people will understand it. That part makes sense to us.

That’s it for On-Page SEO. We hope it helped you understand parts of your Website Grader report a little better and that it got you thinking of ways to improve your search engine rankings.

Stay tuned for our next post on Off-Page SEO.

Add Personalized Driving Directions to Your Accounting Website Design

Article by Ken Marshall

Is your accounting website design looking a little old-fashioned? It can be easy to overlook your website until you start to seem as though you can’t or won’t keep up with new technology, and this can harm your practice’s image. Even if you own an older accounting website design, you should be able to get a lot of tools and gadgets on the web to dress it up. Lot’s of businesses are offering great free content on the internet so you won’t need to order or pay for anything. Let’s look at your “Contact” page as an example.

Let’s add some dynamic driving directions to your website. If you’re still relying on a simple map you’re starting to run the risk of looking like you can’t keep up. Google now makes it easy for a client to type in their address on the contact page and get specific driving instructions. This is more than just a fun feature, and it does more tan make your website, and by extension you, look more technically advanced. It can even save you money by cutting down on phone time spent telling people how to find your office, especially if you’re in a hard to find location. Here’s how to set it up.

The first thing to do is get Google to generate the code for you. Go to the Google driving directions gadget page and click the button that says “Add Gadget to Your Site”.

A new page will open with a short form that you can fill out to modify your gadget. For the most part the default settings are fine. Select a border style that matches your accounting website design. The important thing is that you modify the “destination” field. Change it to the address of your accounting practice. In the destination field, after your address, put your firm name in parenthesis. Now preview your gadget.

Pretty cool, huh? If the name of your firm is too long for the available space increase the width of the gadget and preview it again. That’s all there is to it. Once you get the gadget looking the way you want just click “Get the Code”. A form window will appear at the bottom of the page. All you need to do is copy and paste this code onto your website.

Most of us use content management systems with WYSIWYG, or “rich text” editors. You won’t be able to paste this code into a rich text editor. In order to add the gadget to your site you’ll need to access your pages source code. Don’t panic! This is easier than it sounds.

In your WYSIWYG editor place a sting of like 10 or 20 capital “X”s where you want to place the gadget on your page. Now look around your editor for a button or link that says “plain text”, “html”, “source”, or “code”. Press this and the window of your editor will change to show the actual source code for your page. Next find and highlight the string of “X”s and paste the gadget code over it. That’s all there is to it.

Having a map on your CPA website makes it that much easier for clients to find you. Now with the driving directions gadget on your site you can save your clients time in figuring out precisely how to get to your business from virtually anywhere. You are going to want both of these features incorporated into your accounting website design. With Google literally giving these goodies away there is no acceptable reason not to provide your customers and prospects personalized driving directions.

How to Choose Website Builder Software

Article by Jason Kay

Website builder software is a great option that is out there for those who want to create a website or two for themselves. Individuals who want to build a business creating websites for others need to learn HTML and other skills for website creation from scratch. However, for the individual who wants a simple website of his or her own, website builder software allows you to put one together and have it up and running in as little as a few hours.

Choosing website builder software that meets your needs requires a little knowledge. The most common type is referred to, by those in the industry, as WYSIWYG builders or What You See Is What You Get builders. These are extremely simple to use and can be easily manipulated effectively by anyone who knows his or her way around a word processor. You basically choose templates, type in your text, use editing tools to make changes, select colors, insert photos and voila you’re done. Adding links is done automatically. When you are finished, you click submit and the site will be published for you. It is the ultimate in convenience for website building.

WYSIWYG builders are often included in web hosting packages. There are two main types: online versions that you can use anywhere and downloadable versions that you can use offline and upload your pages when they are finished. There are many different versions of WYSIWYG builders with differing product quality. There are usually tutorials and demos available to help you through the process of building your web pages. There may even be trial offers so you can try them out before you buy them. When you select the web host company and the website builder software, typically you pay the web host company per web site page.

When you are looking to choose website builder software, the best place to start is by trying the free demo. Ask yourself the following questions:

– Can this software support the kind of graphics I want on my web site?

– Does this software allow me to offer message boards, polls, membership sign-ups and other interactive features? If not, a Content Management System with opensource may be a better option than a WYSIWYG builder.

– Am I too limited in what I can do on my website by used this type of builder?
